A little off topic, but nonetheless..

It has nothing to do with the actual rock or the paper, it's the power that it represents.

That paper gives you the power to acquire goods and services. It doesn't matter if you're trading paper, rocks, piss, or vinegar... it's the fact that you CAN trade it for a good or service that makes it valuable.

Taxes are a bit of a touch and go subject. The reason I say that is because there is some evidence that higher taxes do not necessarily equate to less happy people.

Personally, I am a bit of a cynic and a cold, hard, capitalist. I feel that if I work for my money, I'd fight anyone who wants to steal it red in tooth and claw. Well, except if they have a gun. But even then, I've been feeling a little self-destructive lately...

Anyway, that's a rant for another place. My point is that higher taxes do not equate with wasted money. Sometimes the money gets put into places that actually encourage the well-being of the society with which these taxes were placed. Personally, the problem I have always had with taxes is the damned middle tax bracket. You get more money if you are considered poor... and the rich have to pay less than you. 'Tis a bit of an unfair place to be in, if you ask me.

Personally, I agree with the business student I met one day who told me, "look, this whole debt thing is a sham. What do we really owe? Paper that represents a rock that never moves in a bank, a rock we will probably never see. If you say that someone 'owes' you money, what is stopping you from simply saying that they no longer owe you? Its just a paper and a rock, more of a symbol than any real debt. Debt, money, and finances... they are all, if you sit down and think about it, nothing but an abstract."

Ok, I am paraphrasing highly, but you see his/my point. People will die for money... people die for lack of it. When what is 'it' really, but a rock, a piece of paper that represents a rock that we as a society have deemed 'purty'.

Don't get me wrong... I have no alternatives... a part of me always wondered what would happen if you had to work for sex-tickets, in other words, if you had to work a certain amount of hours to even attempt to procreate... but then, what would stop people from procreating anyway? And what difference is it, a shiny rock or a populated city? Each represent about as much real value as the other.

But then again, I am in a REALLY cynical mood right now. Valentines day sucks.
